Out In The West Texas Town of....Amarillo

I know that's not how the song goes but that tune has stuck in my head for several days. When you've ridden around, across and up and down Amarillo that song comes to mind. This is ranching country, it is a western town, cowboys, horses, ranches.and all. It is a neat place to hang your cowboy hat for a few days.
Cowboys...the real deal!!!
We arrived in the area on July 1st and our plan was to stay at the Amarillo Oasis RV Resort. We have stayed there before and found it a pleasant place to be. This time things turned out different. Our dear friends, Ellie and Jim of http://www.justravelin.blogspot.com/ were already there and Ellie had mentioned fireworks in our conversation on the phone. We arrived, sat up the rig and later that day the fireworks started. We like fireworks just like the next guy but we get concerned when those fireworks are flying behind and over our rigs. We thought the owner, who lives on the property, would come out and put a stop to it. That didn't happen so Dan went to his door and politely requested he do something, simply because of the danger involved. Dan told him if it didn't stop we felt we would have to vacate the park for our safety. The owner said, "fine, leave" and proceeded to slam the door in his face. Rude, arrogant, irresponsible!! I've never seen an owner take such a shabby attitude toward his guests, everywhere we've ever stayed the owner or manager has been happy to have us and very accomodating if we needed anything. The fellow finally had signs posted banning fireworks but on the fourth day we left. The trash cans were overflowing, the laundry room we used was filthy and we simply didn't feel comfortable there anymore. We and the Meachams got refunds for our unused days. That's about the only positive thing I can about that situation at this point. We moved on and we are happy wth our decision.

We moved across Amarillo to the Amarillo Ranch RV Park, exit 74 on I-40, located just blocks from the world famous Big Texan Restaurant where the deal is if you can eat a 72 ounce steak, it's free. OK, we aren't going to try that but it's an interesting thought. We arrived at Amarillo Ranch RV Park and set up our rigs. We are facing one direction and the Meachams are facing the other so we are sharing a patio. That same day we sat outside and simply enjoyed ourselves. We have a nice shadetree and we've had a breeze...not wind....a breeze and wonderful temps since our arrival. When checking in, the park staff was friendly, helpful, escorted us to our site, they are constantly out and about checking on the park, seeing to it that all is going well. Yes, we've been very happy here, we feel like we came home. It doesn't get much better than that. We will return to this park and we recommend it to anyone coming through this part of the country. Oh, they also have a great indoor heated pool and Ellie and I got in some laps....nice. There is also a hot tub, a playground, laundry, dog walking area, wide streets and level sites.

The new neighborhood and we love our neighbors......best ever!!!!

Our shared patio and the portable flower bed we carry with us.

Our time in Amarillo has flown by and we have enjoyed spending time with Ellie and Jim. Thanks, you two....it is always an adventure when we are together and we really hate to leave. We are already planning our next adventure.....it will be another lifetime experience....and we are so excited...looking forward to it.
Now, if I could just get that tune out of my head.
Life is very good!!!!!

Hello you two - I'm from Lubbock originally; right now we're in site 254 at Ridgway - your old stomping grounds for last winter! I've eaten at that Big Texan - must have been 35 years ago!

My absolute favorite singer is George Strait. My absolute favorite George Strait song is Amarillo By Morning.

Imagine my thrills when in Guene TX I was standing in the Guene Dancehall where he got his start. Also, when in Jacksonville, TX found he had just bought his parents a house there and that he was in the local WalMart a few days before buying paint?

So - did you see him while in Amarillo?

No? oh well. The trip was still a great one because you saw Ellie and Jim!
